Only a handful of select players can join each of the qualified national teams that take part in the celebrated FIFA World Cup competition held  once every four years. The Chuo University Football Club has three hopefuls who may be selected for the Japan squad four or eight years later. They are: Shohei Mishima (aged 18), Kiichi Yajima (19), and Kai Teramura (18). They are all first graders. “I want to play in Russia four years later” was their replies when Hakumon Herald asked them about their ambitions. Here are their brief introductions.

４年に１度各国が世界の頂点を目指し争うサッカーの祭典ＦＩＦＡワールドカップ（Ｗ杯）。その舞台に立てるのはほんの一握りの選手。その選手として将来を嘱望されているのが中央大学サッカー部１年生、の３選手である。彼らにＷ杯出場について抱負を聞くと、口を揃えて「４年後（ロシア大会）出場したい」と話す。Ｗ杯挑戦を誓うこれら３選手を紹介する。

Shohei Mishima (MF) /三島頌平選手（MF）

Mishima has established himself as a starter in Chuo’s club team which is made up of good players recruited from among high schools across the country. He has been picked as a member of the all-Japan university team. When he played for Teikyo University Kani High School, he led his team to the semiquarter finals in the national tournament with his broad visual field and accurate pass. He drew a J.League scout’s attention, but chose to enter Chuo to retrain himself. After joining Chuo, he strongly felt he needs to build up his physical ability. So he formed a muscle-building club with his teammate Ryohei Okazaki, a fourth-grader centerback. Mishima said of his immediate aim, “I　want to retain my position in the all-Japan university team until I graduate and join a J.League club.”

全国各地から優れた選手が集まる中大サッカー部で、１年生ながらスタメンに定着している。大学全日本代表にも選ばれた実力の持ち主である。帝京大学可児高校時代、持ち前の広い視野と精度の高いパスでチームをインターハイのベスト８に導き、Ｊリーグのスカウトからも注目されたが、自分を鍛えなおすために大学に進学することを決めた。大学サッカーでフィジカル強化の必要性を感じ、４年生のCB岡崎亮平選手と筋トレ部を結成し、体づくりに励んでいるという。当面の目標について三島選手は「大学全日本代表に選ばれ続け、プロ・サッカーに行くこと」と話す。その延長線上にＷ杯が見えてくるのだろう。

Kiichi Yajima (FW) /矢島輝一選手（FW）

Yajima was a member of the FC Tokyo youth club. He scores many goals by taking advantage of his 186-cm height. He placed sixth in the goalscoring ranking when the Kanto University Soccer League ended the Section 10 matches. In a Section 9 game with Meiji University on May 18, he made an eleventh-hour overhead goal to lead his team to a draw. Yajima practices shooting quite hard every day. “After all, my role is to make goals,” he said smilingly. “No matter how short I play, I’m resolved to score.” Asked about his aim, he replied, “I want to get the rookie of the year award. I’ll aim for the World Cup by building up such target achievements.”  Expectations grow with his words.

ＦＣ東京ユース出身。身長１８６センチの体格を生かしたプレーで、関東大学サッカーリーグ第10節を終えた時点で得点ランキング6位の成績を残している。5月18日のリーグ戦第9節対明治大学戦では終了間際にオーバーヘッド・ゴールを決め、引き分けに持ち込んだ。得点を奪うことが自らの役割と言い、そのために日々何本ものシュート練習を大事にしているという。出場時間がどれだけ短くても得点をとる、という信念を持つ。「まず今年新人賞をとる。そういう目標達成の積み重ねでＷ杯を目指したい」という言葉に期待が膨らむ。

Kai Teramura (FW) /寺村介選手（FW）

Teramura was selected as a member of the Japanese team for the international youth tournament held in Germany in April. In the all-Japan high school championships, he led his Seiryo High School team to second place as captain, attracting big attention from professional clubs.  Right now, he cannot play because he is on the injury list. He gets frustrated when he sees other players running vigorously in the field. But Teramura said, “I try to think positively. I tell myself I will be better when I come back.” He added, “I’m thinking of playing abroad after my graduation.”  His teammates pin high hopes on him, saying he has outstanding skills and tough mentality.

今年４月にドイツで行われた国際ユース大会日本代表に選ばれた経歴を持つ。高校選手権大会では星陵高校のキャプテンとして準優勝という結果を収め、プロ・サッカー界から大きな注目を集めていた。残念ながら今、ケガをしており、プレーできない状態にある。他選手の活躍に少し焦りを感じながらも、「ケガをする前よりも成長して復帰する」と、ポジティブな気持ちを抱いている。「大学卒業後は海外に行くことも視野に入れている」と話す。類まれな技術と強靭なメンタルを持つ彼への期待は大きい。

The three players gave these messages to their supporters:

Yajima: “I really feel I’m supported by many people. I want to repay them with wins. I ask them to continue to support me.”

矢島選手　「多くの方に応援してもらっていることは感じているので、白星という結果を残して恩返ししたいです。応援よろしくお願いします。」

Teramura: “I want more people to pay their attention to university soccer. I’ll try to prove that university soccer is as cool as high school soccer so that more people will come to the stand to see our matches.”

寺村選手　「もっと大学サッカーに注目してほしいです。大学サッカーをより多くの方に応援してもらいたいので、高校サッカーと同じくらい「熱い」ということを皆さんに発信していきたい。」

Mishima: “Our team hasn’t played quite well in the current league tournament. But our conditions are getting better. We’ll keep working hard to win. So, please continue to pep us.”

三島選手　「リーグ戦であまり勝てていないが、チームの調子は上がってきています。勝てるように頑張っていくので、応援よろしくお願いします。」
