Yuko Sato, a first-year student in the faculty of policy studies, is of mixed Russian and Japanese blood. She spent her childhood in Russia and was brought up in Japan in later years. Not only is she an eye-catching beauty. She is multilingual, proficient in Russian, Japanese and English. Here is an interview with this charming and intelligent woman.

Hakumon Herald: Isn’t it hard to keep your proficiency in three languages?
Sato: Yes, it is. I often get very much confused. At home, I speak Russian, at school, I speak Japanese, and I speak English in school classes. I always try to speak the same amount of each language.

HH: Where did you learn your English?
Sato: I attended an elementary/junior high school attached to the Russian Embassy once a week. The school gives lessons in accordance with the Russian curriculum. So I could learn advanced English there. Russian English textbooks are all written in English and I often had to read long English texts. I think Russian education is generally of higher levels.

HH: What is your hobby?
Sato: Listening to music and reading. I read classics to enrich my culture. I like the books written by Haruki Murakami if I were to choose from modern literature. His books are quite popular in Russia, too. His ‘Kafka on the Shore’ is my favorite. About music, I often listen to English tunes and I like ones easy to get on to.

HH: Are there anything on which you are working hard at the moment?
Sato: I’m working on economics and French. I didn’t have much interest in economics. But as I will have to seek a career in the future, I thought I should know more about the flow of money. That’s why I’ve started studying economics. I chose French as my fourth language because I thought it would be useful to make my dream come true.

HH: So what would you like to do in future?
Sato: I really wish to work in New York. I love New York. But before that I want to attend a postgraduate course. I’d like to continue my study of economics.

HH: Lastly, tell us of your type.
Sato: I like nice-looking guys. And perhaps I want them to be taller than 175cm, calm and intelligent.

HH: Thank you!
