The word globalization has now taken a firm hold in Japanese society. The Japanese government is getting gradually serious about globalization. In 2014, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology launched a project called “Tobitate! Ryugaku Japan” (Fly out! Study abroad) in partnership with the busi­ness community. It aims to double the number of stu­dents who study abroad by 2020. Hakumon Herald interviewed Yasuo Sone, CEO of Temp Research Institute Co. and Interna­tional Cross-cultural Com­mittee (ICC), on the situa­tion in Japan with regard to studying abroad.

今やグローバリゼーションという言葉は社会に定着した。昨年から文部科学省と産業界の連携によって、2020年までに日本人の留学生を倍増させることを目標とした「トビタテ!留学JAPAN」と呼ばれる官民連携プロジェクトが始まるなど、徐々に国際化に本腰を入れはじめた。今回、テンプ総合研究所(称号・ICC国際交流委員会)の曽根靖雄代表取締役に、日本の留学事情などについて語ってもらった。(Read more..)

 Hakumon Herald starts a special “Global Persons” series from this month’s issue to feature a dozen of Japanese people who play an active role abroad or at international organizations. The series is aimed to help student readers make new discoveries by presenting insightful views and messages only those people can send out from their actual experiences in the global community. It begins with Ms Tomoko Ichikawa, (a graduate of Cross-Cultural Studies, the Faculty of Policy Studies of Chuo University) who works as a Senior Business Development Officer at the Australian Embassy in Japan.  “Shimamura Gofukuten” (a draper’s shop) was founded in Saitama Prefecture in 1953. Changing its name to “Shimamura Co., Ltd.” in 1972, it established an efficient inventory management system based on the cutting-edge computer technology at the time. It later structured a unique purchasing, distribution and employment system. Today the company boasts annual sales next only to the industry leader, Uniqlo Co., Ltd. It runs 1,931 shops, including those in foreign countries such as China and Taiwan.  Studying abroad gives you chances to communicate with students from various parts of the world, paving the way for you to mature as a person. Hakumon Herald interviewed Ms. Humiko Hashimoto, who spent a year in Australia for Asian studies and worked at a local NGO as an intern. While in Australia, she organized a photo exhibition featuring the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, which proved to be a big success. She talked about the charms of studying abroad.

  Hakumon Herald interviewed Mr. Kazuhiro Hasegawa, a graduate of Chuo’s Faculty of Economics, who had held managerial posts at many conglomerates, among them Kellogg Japan Co. and Beyer Co., before becoming representative director and CEO of Nikon-Essilor Co. in 2000. As a management consultant, he has resuscitated more than 2,400 loss-making companies.
